Ferro & Farinha
Okay, this eatery may be not the typical Italo-Brazilian experience since the owner is a New Yorker, but the pizzas are great though. It’s one of the advantages of being in a country of immigrants, where everybody gets a chance trying their luck. Also in a highly competitive market of pizzerias. Located in the bustling neighborhood of Catete, eating a pizza at Ferro & Farinha is a great way to get to see a lesser known neighborhood of Rio. It is an ultra small place with few tables, where people tend to eat their slices of innovative pizza on the street or at the bar. Cozy, with a very laid back vibe.
Rua Andrade Pertence 42-D, Catete.
Originally from São Paulo, pizzeria Bráz has quickly conquered the hearts of the cariocas. Their crispy edged pizzas, partly topped with ingredients imported from Italy, already received several awards. The restaurant has a real traditional feel to it, with its tiled floor, long bar with vitrines, stocked with glasses, wine and beer bottles. With its wooden floor, tables and chairs, Eccellenza Pizzaria has a true rustic vibe. It is a intimate place, in a street in Botafogo full with other restaurants. After its recent renovation, the pizza house also changed its menu a bit, including lasagne, made of homemade massa. Zona Sul Supermarket
This might appear as a strange recommendation, but the Zona Sul supermarket chain in Rio de Janeiro serves some good and relatively cheap pizzas in their shops with restaurants. Located in neighborhoods like Ipanema, Copacabana and Leblon, Zona Sul has a great tradition of baking pizzas with thin crusts. On hot summer days, the pizzerias of Zona Sul tend to get crowded with people returning from the beach, grabbing a quick bite before going home.
Pizzaria Zona Sul is located in different neighborhoods in Rio.
Open since little over a year, Pappa Jack is a huge hit for the locals in Copacabana. They have an extensive menu, with one of the most popular pizzas that carries the name of the restaurant. They have a little terrace and there is normally live music. The restaurant is a tribute to the Brazilian musician and chef Jack Le Grand. He made the most diverse plates, since he traveled the world as a musician and knew lots of different recipes. He never opened his own restaurant though, but his kids did, in his honor. They use recipes of their dad to make their delicious pizzas. Recently they opened a restaurant in Barra as well, and there is one planned to open next year in the upscale neighborhood of Leblon. This is the right choice for a really good pizza in Rio de Janeiro.
