A stop in The Fifties, one of the more traditional burger places in Rio de Janeiro, is a travel in time altogether. The restaurant is decorated in an old-fashioned manner, with typical American antique booths and a counter top where one orders a strawberry milkshake. You can feel like you were cast in an old movie, where you’d meet up with your friends for burgers and shakes. The almost extinguished Coca Cola glass bottle is still available in The Fifties, as are their home-made milkshakes, made with classic ingredients used in the 50s. Veja Rio, a respected magazine, selected their specialty burger with fillet steak three times. Whether it is a burger, shakes, fries and onion rings, or just a trip back in time, The Fifties has you covered. The restaurant is located inside Rio Sul Shopping. map

As its name suggests, Hell’s Burguer is no place for people with small stomachs. Their burgers are big, juicy and ironically, bites of heaven. They butcher their own meat, made with rib fillet, and provide their very own beer, From Hell. This restaurant also makes a super sized burger that you need to order two days in advance, named Colt 45 in their menu. The only cheese available is their smooth cheddar cheese, which alone conquered many hearts. To top the order off, their caramelized onions and homemade bacon jelly. If jelly isn’t your thing then their spicy barbecue sauce So Hot! It’s Stupid! will do. Hell’s Burguer’s crunchy fries will beat any others you’ve tried right off the bat. Give this burger place a go, and you might find yourself going back to it more than once. They are located a short walk from the Botafogo metro station. map
An empty seat in Comuna is a rare sight, even more so anyone leaving with a frown on their face. The brick walls and dim lights set a pleasant environment, and the burgers are mouthwatering. It is inexcusable to go to this restaurant without trying their cocoa bun burgers with bacon and duckling meat. Their barred potato chips with curry are an additional must to your order. Comuna is no ordinary burger joint. In fact it is way more. It is a hip alternative bar with a cultural agenda. It is also located a short walk from the Botafogo metro station. map
Burger Joint NY
This famous burger restaurant from New York City also found out that Cariocas love burgers. Last December they opened a restaurant in Leblon. Maybe not really local and a simple place, but with great burgers. The burgers are backed on a volcanic stone fire, which gives them the taste of a good BBQ. They come with delicious home made mayonnaise. If you don’t feel like eating meat, they also have a really good vegetarian option with fried Camembert cheese. This is a perfect place to get a good burger before going out in Leblon to popular bars like Jobi of Boa Praça, just around the corner of Burger Joint NY. map
One of the classic restaurants in Rio de Janeiro. It is not the typical burger place you go for a quick bite, but it here you eat your burger with style. It is located in the better part of Ipanema, rua Garcia D’Avila, with lots of good restaurant options. But the burger of ViaSete is famous under the locals, and one of the favorites in town. They have three burgers, one of them vegetarian. The most popular burger is the Moulin Rouge, specialty of the chef, with goat cheese and a delicious confit of purple onion ViaSete is much more than just a burger place, but it is definitely a great option to have an excellent burger in a contemporary vibe, with great drinks and dessert. map
B de Burger
One of the success stories and local favorite burger places in Rio de Janeiro. It opened its first burger place in Barra, far away from touristic Rio. After a three year span of trial and error, it expanded to three shops in the popular South Zone of the city. It also opened a place in Brazil’s capital Brasilia, and now has two more shops in Rio. It became an instant local favorite, with it’s laid back vibe, and of course, delicious burgers. The place was awarded as the place with the best burger of Rio in 2018 by the important magazine Veja. A nice marketing trick is all the jokes with the letter B they make. map
Hambuergeria da Alfândega
Last, but not least, is this hamburger place, created in 2016 by a Portuguese named Gonçalo Carvalho. He started with a place in the city center and recently opened another one there, and one in Ipanema. The ones in the center are greatly popular lunch places for the locals working at the city center. Between 12 and 14 hours there are huge lines to get a burger. The places are all beautifully decorated, spacious and you can see that they put great thought in how to create a nice ambience. The burgers are big, tasty and, not unimportant, the additional fries are awesome. Definitely worth a try. map
