Autumn is finally here and the weather is starting to cool down in Rio. This is the perfect season for beautiful blue sky days in the city. Even though it’s still hot, May is the perfect month for long walks and trips around the Marvellous City. It may be also great to join some really nice events in Rio de Janeiro. Choose the ones you like the most and tell us how was it!
- Inverso Jazz
Every Wednesday, from April 25th to May 16th, Inverso Gávea, a restaurant located inside Jockey Club, is hosting a Jazz festival at night. Their goal is to promote a Jam Session with improv concerts. The Jazz festival starts at 8pm and it costs R$25 for the show.
- Roda de choro
Choro is an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre, it’s a fast and happy rhythm. Instruments involved in the playing of choro are flute, guitar and cavaquinho, mandolin, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. Glória hosts a very famous ‘roda de choro’ every Wednesday and you should join it. Free event. Venue: Boteco Pé de Santa – Rua Benjamin Constant, 104 map.
- St. Petersburg Dance Theatre
St. Petersburg Dance Theatre is an all-male ballet company that are in Rio de Janeiro to present their Dancing in the Rain show. The dancers are also actors and acrobats who perform gymnastics acts. The ballet dancers perform complex acrobatics while the rain falls on them. Tickets are ranging from R$140 to R$250 and can be found here. Venue for the ballet is Vivo Rio, in Aterro do Flamengo.
- Jazz at The Maze
Great jazz night in Rio, the Maze is a very famous place in the city among the people who love jazz. Price: R$50. Address: Rua Tavares Bastos, 414, Casa 66, Catete.
You won’t need to leave Rio to travel around different cultures. During the Europe Day, you can have a look at different cuisines, music, art and other attractions. This event is organized with the help of the French and German Consulates and the Embassy of Poland. Address: Praça Luís de Camões, Glória. Time: From 12pm to 9pm.
The Lavradio Fair — Feira Rio Antigo — is a popular street market in Rio de Janeiro that happens on the first Saturday of every month in the Lavradio Street, Centro. It’s the perfect place to find good jewelry, cheap and nice clothing, antique shops and more.
- Sailing Trip to Cagarras Islands
Sail around Guanabara bay and enjoy its marvelous views. Continue through the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema to the Cagarras islands where we will spend the day swimming and snorkeling. This is a full day trip, leaving Urca at 11am and returning at 7pm. This trip repeats every Saturday, so you can just check when it’s best for you. Price: R$295 (driks and snacks included). - Casarão Veg
This vegan fair is packed with good food, responsible fashion, make up, art and music. Venue: Restaurante Casarão 22 map. From 2pm to 8pm. Free entry.
- Percussion Class
Monobloco, a well-known ‘bloco de carnaval’ in Rio, is starting to teach percussion classes. This first class will be held at Sala Baden Powell map and has a cost of R$50. If you are interested, just send an email to [email protected]
- Downtown Beer Festival
From May 10th to May 13th at Shopping Downtown map in Barra, join this beer festival for more than 24 craft breweries, food trucks and live music. From 12pm until 10pm everyday.
- Niterói Blues Festival
From May 11th to May 13th, Niterói hosts a Blues Festival at Teatro Popular map. If you’re going from Rio, just take the ferry boat in Centro and you’ll arrive just next to the venue. For this festival, lots of live music, craft beer, barbecue festival and lots of food. Check the line up for the Festival in their event on Facebook. Time: 6pm – 10pm.Tickets: R$10 or 2kg of food for donation.
A Caipirinha event hosted by Caminhos Language Centre. This is an informal party on the sidewalks, where they offer really good caipirinha for only R$5 and you can meet other foreigners in Brazil, as well as local friends who stop by. The atmosphere is always great, with free snacks available and Brazilian music playing. Starts at 5pm but people usually start to arrive around 6:30pm.
For those who like house and deep music, there’s this great party at Ilha do Itanhangá map, in Barra da Tijuca. Line Up: Pic Schmitz, Elekfantz, D-Groov, Hot Bullet, Andrew Gracie, Sandro Valente, House ‘N’ Deep Team, Scarlatelli Music, Laura Keller and Franco Pellegrini. Tickets from R$50 to R$120 are being sold here.
- Orchestre de la Suisse Romande
This Orchester, directed by Jonathan Nott and guest conductor Kazuki Yamada, is composed by 112 musicians ready to bring classical music to Rio de Janeiro. They will be playing Debussy, Ravel and Brahms. Prices starting at R$40 can be found here. Venue: Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.
- Half Marathon at Porto Maravilha
Choose to run a 5k or a 21k marathon in Rio de Janeiro. Sign up at the official website and pay a fee of R$95 for the 5k run or R$130 for the 21k.
- Shell Open Air
For 16 years Open Air has been happening in Brazil. For this year, there will be several days to celebrate cinema! Join the live the experience in which cinema, music, gastronomy and interactive activities come together in the open air! The Super Sceen, the size of a tennis court, is the main protagonist, but the digital projection and sound system also make the sessions a unique moment. For three weeks, starting on May 16th, different famous movies will be playing in this festival, including Titanic, Black Panther, The Silence of the Lambs and Pulp Fiction. This free event brings good forró to Copacabana. Free dance classes at the beach, live music and food stands. A perfect event to add to a nice day at the beach. Starting at 2pm, at Posto 6, in front of Sofitel Hotel map near Forte de Copacabana.
Great samba starting at 3pm. Price: R$40 at the door. Venue: IED map.
- Ozzy Osbourne
Ending his carrer, Ozzy Osbourne is coming to Rio de Janeiro for one last lime with his Farewell World Tour. The venue for this amazing concert will be the Jeunesse Arena in Barra da Tijuca. Prices ranging from R$140 to R$680 can be bought here.
- Urca Jazz Beer Fest
Live jazz, craft beer, good food, art, fashion and culture. Time: 4pm. Address: Praça General Tiburcio, Urca.
