We usually say that the new year only really begins in Brazil after Carnival is over. Now that February is over, March brings new things to do in Rio, with routine coming back to its normality in the city. Check here the best events in Rio de Janeiro during the month of March.
- Feira do Amanhã
From March 1st to March 4th, Praça Mauá map in Centro will be the venue for a big open fair in Rio. It’s a free event with a huge variety of stands selling food, art, fashion, jewelry, craftwork and much more for a good price. From 10am to 7pm. Take the subway and VLT to get there easily.
A Caipirinha event hosted by Caminhos Language Centre. This is an informal party on the sidewalks, where they offer really good caipirinha for only R$5 and you can meet other foreigners in Brazil, as well as local friends who stop by. The atmosphere is always great, with free snacks available and Brazilian music playing. Starts at 5pm but people usually start to arrive around 6:30pm.
- Batmakumba na Praça Tiradentes
Party with Brazilian music at Centro Cultural Carioca map in Centro. Great place to mingle with locals. Free entry if you get there before midnight.
- Football game
If you’re Rio for the first time, you need to watch a football game. Botafogo vs Flamengo, two of the biggest teams in Rio, will be playing at the Olympic Stadium, Engenhão map. The tickets are not being sold yet, but check Botafogo’s website for more information a few days before the game.
Tiradentes Square (Praça Tiradentes) map in Centro will be the venue for the 29th edition of this jazz fair in Rio. Live jazz, Lindy Hop workshop and also samba music will be displayed in this event. Besides that, a lot of stands will be placed on the square and people will be selling food, clothes, jewelry and craftwork. From 1pm to 8pm, free entry.
The Lavradio Fair — Feira Rio Antigo — is a popular street market in Rio de Janeiro that happens on the first Saturday of every month in the Lavradio Street, Centro. It’s the perfect place to find good jewelry, cheap and nice clothing, antique shops and more.
This is a ‘charme’ party. Charme is a popular music genre and dance in Rio de Janeiro, in which everyone comes together to dance a mix of black and funk music to the same choreography. You don’t need to practice for this or anything, just join the crowd and copy what they’re doing, that’s how charme works. Here’s a video of people dancing ‘charme’ if you’re interested. This party in Tijuca begins at 4pm.
- Zumba workshop
Zumba is a type of dance very famous in Brazil nowadays. It mixes aerobic movements with hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo, always performed to energetic music. Learn how to Zumba with this workshop for R$60. It will be 4 classes with 1 hour and 20 minutes of duration, for 4 consecutive Mondays. Venue: Sobrado das Artes. Sign up here. Samba da Ouvidor is a famous ‘roda de samba’ in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a free street party and happens on the corner of Ouvidor and Mercadi Streets. From 5pm to 10pm.
This is a guided visit and class in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Centro. Professor Paulo Debom, who taught classes in the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay will be guiding you through the Fine Arts Museum talking about Brazilian art, fashion and history while exploring the museum’s collection. R$50.
- Anime Barra World
- Sertanejo in Rio
From March 16th to March 18th, Rio de Janeiro will be hosting a Sertanejo event called Sertanejo in Rio. There will be lots of live music with big names, such as Marília Mendonça, Wesley Safadão and Maiara & Maraisa. Besides Sertenajo, pop music will also be highlighted during this festival, with concerts of Anitta and Léo Santana. Prices ranging from R$60 to R$400 each day. You can buy tickets here (day 1, day 2, day 3). Venue: Marina da Glória.
During March 17th and 18th, BBQ & Beer Fest will be going on in Cosme Velho. Come to eat good food and drink craft beer. More than 15 craft breweries will be there showing their products. Address: Casa da Polônia (Rua das Laranjeiras, 540). Time: 1pm – 10pm. Pet-friendly event.
- Fresh Water Festival
Day party at Rio Water Planet, Rio’s water park. Music, swimming pools and the sun! More than 40 water attractions, more than 20 DJs, 2 musical stages and much more! Prices ranging from R$60 to R$130. More info: Facebook event.
Katy Perry and her Witness Tour come to Brazil for a concert at the Olympic Park in Barra. Prices are ranging from R$140 to R$560.
This free event brings good forró to Copacabana. Free dance classes at the beach, live music and food stands. A perfect event to add to a nice day at the beach. Starting at 2pm, at Posto 6, in front of Sofitel Hotel map near Forte de Copacabana.
- Pearl Jam concert
Pearl Jam is bringing rock ‘n’ roll to Brazil with their international tour for a huge concert in Maracanã. Prices ranging from R$110 to R$700 can be bought here.
- Festival Sabores do Rio
Music and gastronomy festival at Parque Garota de Ipanema in Arpoador. Lots of food trucks, craftwork stands and live music. Line up has yet to be disclosed. Keep an eye on their Facbeook event.
