New Years’ Eve is gone but Rio de Janeiro is still crowded with people hanging around for the summer. January is also the time when the city starts to get ready for Carnaval. Lots of good parties and blocos de carnaval all around the city, so get ready to enjoy the first month of 2018 with the best events in Rio de Janeiro.
- The Glow Party!
Samba and free caipirinhas until midnight! Also, random free tequila shots all night long! This is going to be a great party! Face painting, dark lights and cheap drinks. The venue for this event, New Mariuzinn, is a very traditional night club in Rio. Two DJs will be also playing lots of House, Hiphop, Reggaeton, Funk and more. Buy tickets online here. - Bloco do Bola Preta + Maria Rita
Bola Preta is one of the most famous blocos of carnaval in Rio. Getting ready for their biggest event in February, this will be a great warm up for Carnaval. Maria Rita, a famous MPB singer will be also joining the group singing the best of samba! Free entrance! Venue: Terreirão do Samba map in Centro.
- Soviet Union photography exhibit
This photography exhibit called “A União Soviética através da câmera” (“The Soviet Union through the camera”) brings to Rio more than 200 black and white photos from six famous photographers from the former Soviet Union. Pictures of different places of the ‘ghost country’ are being displayed there. You can visit the exhibit until February 25th, from 12pm to 6pm at Paço Imperial map. Free event.
- Live Jazz at The Maze
The best jazz place in Rio, The Maze starts the year with live jazz, every first Friday of the month. If you enjoy jazz, this is the most traditional Jazz night in Rio de Janeiro. This is a very fun party to warm up for Carnaval. Believe us, the place will be packed with Cariocas having fun! If you want to mix up with the locals, this is the place for you. The party is happening in CCBB, one of the famous museums in Rio. Tickets available online.
- Candy Bloco
Another bloco de rua, getting ready for Carnaval. Candy Bloco will be rehearsing for their parade and this event is going to be huge! The venue for this party is MAM, known for hosting the best parties in the city. Put your name on the list of their event on Facebook and get in for free until 7pm. Other blocos will be also playing there and lots of different DJs will be covering the live music breaks.
Two of the biggest blocos de carnaval are getting together in Rio for this big party! Monobloco mixes different songs from different musical styles to the warm beat of samba while Sargento Pimenta puts samba into Beatles songs. Can’t get better than that! If you’re not in Rio for Carnaval, you won’t want to miss that, because this is the real deal. Tickets starting at R$60 can be bought online here.
In the rooftop of Lagoon map, this event is bringing really good samba and pagode to Rio! Live music with a famous samba band and open bar until 5pm! This is a more exclusive event and the tickets are not cheap. It’s R$120 now but they are getting more expensive, so buy yours fast.
From January 12th to January 14th, Rio is hosting a tattoo convention in Centro. Lots of tattoo artists from all over the world are gathering for this event. Address: Av. Paulo de Frontin, 1 – Cidade Nova.
- Lagoa Burger & Beer
Beer, rock music, homemade burger, food trucks, fashion, art and more. Everything in the same place. Join Lagoa Burger & Beer from January 12th to January 14th, at Parque das Figueiras in Lagoa. Free entrance.
Gafieira Elite map is a venue in Centro known for its great funk parties. This is where locals go to enjoy the night, so get your groove on to dance carioca funk all night long. Entrace can only be paid with cash. R$30
- Bloco Me Beija Crush
Another event that will make people warm up for carnaval! Put some glitter on your face and go enjoy the party in Lapa! Free until midnight! Click here for more info.
This is a multi-themed cultural event with emphasis on comics, art and literature in general. Rio Comics will feature several panels with attractions, illustrators, comics, dubbers, music, cosplay contest, foodtrucks, sale booths, rare collectibles and more. January 13th and 14th at Rua Marquês de Abrantes, 55 – Flamengo.
This free event is for those who enjoy forró, a popular Brazilian genre of music/dance. Live music and food trucks will make for a really nice Sunday! Venue: Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.
- Football game
With the start of Rio’s championship this month, one of the first games may not be a big game, but if you’re Rio for the first time, it’s a nice experience. The Vasco (big team) against Bangu (small team) game will take place in Vasco’s stadium, São Januário map. The tickets are not being sold yet, but check Vasco’s website for more information near the game.
- Deep Please – Electronic party
Big electronic music event happening in Maracanã. Line up: Dashdot, Gabriel Boni, D-Groov, Toucan and Deep Please Crew. Tickets ranging from R$35 to R$100 can be bought online here.
A Caipirinha event hosted by Caminhos Language Centre. This is an informal party on the sidewalks, where they offer really good caipirinha for only R$5 and you can meet other foreigners in Brazil, as well as local friends who stop by. The atmosphere is always great, with free snacks available and Brazilian music playing.
From January 19th to January 21st, Parque dos Patins at Lagoa will be hosting an event mixing rock music and craft beer. An informal local event to meet lots of cariocas in a nice and relaxed vibe.
Roda de Samba in Glória. People gather around a circle to play samba while others dance and hang out around them. This is a very Brazilian thing and you should definitely go and have this experience. Samba starts at 4pm and there will be food trucks and booths selling art, jewelry and fashion. Address: Praça Luís de Camões, Rua do Russel – Glória.
Another bloco de carnaval – this one hosted by one of the famous Brazilian singers nowadays, Wesley Safadão. This is a big event, as more than a thousand people are expecting to attend this party in Niterói. Tickets are ranging from R$60 to R$400 and you can buy it online here.
