The first week of the new year was very hot, Cariocas and gringoes swarmed the beaches. Some really big waves and tricky currents sadly caused several casualties. I recommend all of you to be very careful, the ocean is very dangerous in Rio. Never go night swimming since there are no life guards around to get you out if you get unlucky.
This time of the year the samba schools of Rio have their rehearsal parties, most of them on Friday and Saturday nights. You can also go to rehearsal parades for free; almost every Saturday and Sunday night starting at 19h30 until Carnival starts. Read more about samba schools here. This Sunday the first division school Estácio de Sá will parade at 21:30h.
No games until the state cups who start in the beginning of February.
The buses that normally would run on Rua Visconde de Pirajá are temporarily running on the beach avenue Vieira Souto, there is no clear available schedule, sometimes there are changes so you have to make sure at the time you want to catch the bus. The next one or two years traffic in the center of Rio will be complicated during rush hours, big constructions in the port area are the main reasons.
It’s January now so the city is full of street parties and other fun things to do. At this time of the year Lapa is crowded, especially on weekends. As alawys in big crowds here, remember there are lots of pick pocket artists and robbers so don’t bring valuables. The best nightlife guide in English is The Rio Times Nightlife Guide, just click the link.
Fruits of the week:
Pineapples, passion fruit, nectarines, water-melon and custard apples (fruta do conde) are good choices in January
