Good day to you all! It is time for the sixth weekly from Gringo-Rio.
The autumn has definitely arrived with brisk nights and lovely clear days. Together with spring I find this my favourite time of the year. Perfect for hiking, bicycle tours or just nice walks along the beach!
The last year has gradually seen a slight return of violence in Rio, more robberies and shootouts in the favelas. For us that have been living in Rio for a while this comes as no surprise since we still see that large parts of the law enforcement are surrounded by rumours of corruption (that often becomes proven as true). Steps to solve the great social problems that exist in large parts of the city does not seem to have been taken on any profound level. I don’t know what we can expect in the near future regarding this, what I do know is that we can expect some kind of quite aggressive action from the city to make sure that crime and demonstrations will not taint the image of the World Cup.
Football: On Saturday the 3rd league leading Fluminense take on Vitória at home in Maracanã. The game starts at 9 PM. On Sunday the 4th Flamengo play Palmeiras in the same stadium, the game starts at 4 PM.
Public transport: The buses that normally would run on Rua Visconde de Pirajá are temporarily running on the beach avenue Vieira Souto.
The best nightlife guide in English is The Rio Times Nightlife Guide, just click the link. In general there are quite few options around aside from Lapa.
