Greetings! This is the fifth weekly from Gringo-Rio.
It is a rainy Rio, very few tourists are in the city right now.
The night between Tuesday and Wednesday this week saw violent protests on the streets of Copacabana and Ipanema. The discovery of tv-personality DG killed by a bullet was the ignitor. Many theories have been presented, the most plausible is perhaps that it was a stray bullet during a fire fight between police and drug dealers on Monday that killed him. The occassion is used to bring forward protests against a supposedly organized criminal network controlled by parts of the UPP, Policia Militar and the Fire department. One person was killed during the confrontations. During the next week or so it is a good idea to be attentive on the streets in Zona Sul, if there are any signs of riots or large amounts of police it is adviceable to take a detour.
On Sunday at 4 PM Botafogo play Internacional in Maracanã.
The buses that normally would runon Rua Visconde de Pirajá are temporarily running on the beach avenue Vieira Souto.
An interesting exhibition might be “Deslize no Mar”. The history and present of surf and skate culture in Rio. Full of photos, clips and objects. Check it out in Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR). Open until the Sun 27th of April 10h/17h.
The best nightlife guide in English is The Rio Times Nightlife Guide, just click the link. In general there are quite few options around aside from Lapa.
