2016 Summer Olympics in Rio

Ever since Rio was voted as host for the 2016 Summer Olympics in 2009 expectations have been high on not just the event but also on the promised improvements that to the city that were part of the proposition. In close competition the Rio proposal won the majority of the votes over Madrid. What was in it then?

The Bid
The great advantage of having hosted two major international sports events before 2016, in 2009 the Pan American Games and in 2014 the football World Cup in football, is obvious. Infra structure, arenas, accommodation and experience are thus guaranteed. Aside from that South America has never hosted the Olympic Games. Apart from the fancy mumbo-jumbo you always have surrounding these bids, there were a few other things that would have been liked by the jury:

- All events except football are in the city
- Arenas does not have to be built
- Lots of social programs, the cup will generate lots of jobs
- Good climate
- Environmental angle; 24 million trees will be planted in the state until 2016, thus the games can be considered CO2 neutral

Concerns were raised about both security and corruption, these were met with clear strategies. You can already see how this has been put into action here in Rio.

The Plans
Rio can expect about 10.500 athletes from 205 nations, how will they solve this? The fact is that you already have most arenas, in combination with some temporary solutions the eents part is solved. On top of that training facilities and accommodation for all staff and athletes has to be arranged, this is going to be enacted within the perimeters for the planned Olympic Village locatedin Barra de Tijuca. The infrastructure for the actual games will be handled by making lanes on the connecting transit roads exclusive for the events. An easy and good way to get an overview of all plans is to check out the interactive map on the official site, just go to the site of 2016 Summer Olympics by clicking this link to see it.
