The warm and nice summer weather is just continuing, perfect for beach and a coconut in a quiosque. The city just turned 450 years, celebrations that were very dampened by a current rise in crime, corruption scandals and woes about Brazil’s financial future.
So, I went to Detran to get the annual revision of my car done, all went well for me. I observed something there I think may be a good example for people how things can work here. Cars and trucks in terrible condition passed through the check-up with no problem, from what I could see they were hardly looked at. Plenty of people running around… Yes, of course… A bribe scheme was well established in that place, if you pay the right guy you will get your vehicle through. If you don’t believe me, have a look out the window when you’re on the highway, tell me many of those vehicles are not in a horrible state and dangerous. I talked to a Brazilian friend who used to work at Detran, he said this is exactly how it is; some units even specialize in it. Detran is a public company run by the state, this is how much of he public sector works, this is why the country can’t develop. It is everywhere!
I follow a bit of what is written about Brazil and its economy internationally, two new articles in The Economist were quite interesting: In a quagmire and Thatcherism Winning Adherence. The content is perhaps not so revolutionary, but I had a read through the comment field and I found some pretty sound opinions ventilated there. I normally never read those but in this case it was quite interesting, if it all goes to the bottom the opinions expressed here will perhaps get realized.
